The theoretical framework underpinning the program stems from Patricia Benner’s Novice to Expert theory. “Recognition, reward, and retention of the experienced nurse in positions of direct clinical practice-along with the documentation and adequate description of their practice- are the first steps in improving the quality of patient care” (Benner, 1982, p. 402).
